Blood test:

TREATMENT

Treatment for thalassemia major often involves regular blood transfusions and folate supplements.

If you receive blood transfusions, you should not take iron supplements. Doing so can cause a high amount of iron to build up in the body, which can be harmful.
Persons who receive significant numbers of blood transfusions need a treatment of Thalassemia called chelation therapy to remove excess iron from the body.
A bone marrow transplant may help treat the disease in some Thalassemia patients, especially children.

Diagnosis:

Doctors diagnose thalassemia using blood tests, with a complete blood count (CBC) and exceptional hemoglobin tests. A CBC methods the amount of hemoglobin and the changed kinds of blood cells, such as red blood cells, in a taster of blood.

It is the most prevalent hereditarily communicated blood disorder with a transporter rate of 5-8%; around 5000 children are diagnosed each year in the country. 1,2 The support of treatment is blood transfusion and iron chelation therapy.

Types of Thalassemia:

There are two major types:

  • Alpha occurs when a gene or genes linked to the alpha globin protein are missing or changed.
  • Beta befalls when similar gene defects affect the production of the beta-globin protein.
